LPFM Party Tuesday

Celebrate the Sound of Tomorrow!

Tuesday, 10/15 / Noon / FREE Public Event with Lunch / Pike Place Market

Registration Link: celebratelpfm.bpt.me

Join us for lunch at the Pike Place Market Elliott Bay Room on the top floor of the Economy Market. Be the first to get your map of proposed neighborhood radio stations for Puget Sound. Meet the low power FM applicants who will change the audio landscape of our region!

On October 15th, 2013, the Federal Communications Commission will open an application window for thousands of low power FM radio frequencies (LPFM) across the United States. This window is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to build out more infrastructure for our media and community technology ecosystems. With their minimal operating costs and neighborhood-oriented broadcast range, LPFMs can quickly become local multi-platform cultural hubs, providing easy access to production equipment and hands-on media training.

LPFM

The FCC is opening up Low Power FM (LPFM) licenses starting on October 15, 2013. SEED and SPLAB, two non-profit organizations in the Rainier Valley have combined to apply for a license and hopefully bring community radio to the Rainier Valley. It is to create awareness of this effort that this blog exists.

In addition to Jerri Plumridge of SEED Arts and Paul Nelson of SPLAB, Tony Benton of Musica Media and Justina Guyott, a local community activist, have joined forces to be the beginning of an advisory board to guide the process. Jonathan Lawson, formerly of Reclaim The Media, has joined our efforts. This board is seeking volunteers to move the idea forward and will be hosting a larger community meeting to share our vision and find others who would be committed to creating a diverse, innovative and creative radio station to help improve the quality of life in the Rainier Valley. See our vision here.
